Joao Pessoa leading the way with a public bicycle rental system.

Joao Pessoa is the first Capital of the Northeast and the third city in the country to have a
system of public bicycles. The system was released on March 27th, 2010. The ‘Pedala Joao
Pessoa’, is a system of bicycle rentals, with four stations distributed initially in the seafront of
the capital, which aims to provide a healthier and eco means of transport to the people. This
innovative alternative of urban mobility is a realization of the Municipality of Joao Pessoa
(PMJP), developed by the Superintendence of Transport and Traffic (STTrans).

The ‘Pedala Joao Pessoa’ is characterized as a technological solution for the sustainable use
of bicycles, facilitating the movement of people in the capital and has already been deployed
successfully in Rio de Janeiro and in Blumenau, Santa Catarina State.

The launch was attended by the Mayor Ricardo Coutinho and by the municipal secretaries.
Those present at the launch event were already registered and might ride. In addition, users
can do a monthly subscription to use the service or even purchase a day pass. Among the
benefits to the city, the ‘Pedala Joao Pessoa’ will enable an improvement in people’s mobility
and a reduction of pollutant emission.

Computerized system – the bikes are available in four terminal stations, installed in the
seafronts of Tambaú, Cabo Branco and Manaíra. They will be managed by a computer
powered by batteries and will feature a panel displaying information, such as map, location
of stations, instructions and advertisements. In the bikes are installed an electromechanical
devices of lock and release, signal lamps and a microchip.

The system was developed by Serttel, a firm specializing in technology solutions for the
management and urban mobility and it is present in cities like Recife/PE, Natal/RN, Petrolina/
PE, Rio de Janeiro/RJ, Guarulhos/SP, Sao Jose dos Campos/SP, among others.

Among other actions, Serttel is also responsible for the new monitoring system Area Traffic
Control (CTA) of Joao Pessoa, inaugurated on March 24, 2010 by STTrans with 15 cameras
installed at strategic points in the city and with new features that will facilitate the resolution
of problems in traffic.

Value of lease – the value of the lease for those who are registered will be R$ 15.00 per month.
Who choose to hire daily will pay R$ 5.00 (five reais). The objective of PMJP is to encourage
enrollment and massive use of bicycles as means of transportation.
